| Notes |
- "Long Island Monthly" March 1990. Suffolk County's first recorded matricide that so shocked the populace that it prompted the first local execution in more than 30 years. Francis Asbury Hawkins, 22 of Islip had quarreled with his mother, the wealthy Cynthia Hawkins, over his plans to marry a servant girl. They seemed to reconcile their differences until October 1st. 1887, when, in the midst of a carriage ride, Francis Hawkins shot his mother three times and dumped her body. He was found guilty of murder and on December 11, 1888 became the last of seven men to be hanged at the Riverhead Jail.
