    • Our Town: Sag Harbor's Revolutionary War Patriots

      On September 4, 1941, Louis Tooker Vail wrote the Sag Harbor Express th at there was a "wealth of Revolutionary War data that clusters about Sag H arbor [known to] very few people in Sag Harbor," and he named 19 Revolutio nary War Patriots buried in the Old Burying Ground noting that "there m ay be more." Vail added "the wives of these Patriots... fought just as ha rd for the American Cause in their way, and are as fully deserving of reco gnition as their husbands." Vail gave the names of these "brave" and "patr iotic" women beside those of their husbands.

      Fordham, Captain Daniel (1730-1816) and Phebe Jessup Fordham (1736-1806 ). Fordham served in Colonel Josiah Smith's regiment of Minute Men. He bec ame a refugee and aided other refugees. After the war he was a mariner a nd innkeeper in Sag Harbor. Buried #397 OBG.
