Town of Rochester -- This had probably its first white permanent settlers in 1676, Thomas Teunisse Quick and others. In contrast to the ruthless Indian slaying career of Thomas Quick's grandson was the benevolence of his sons, Jurian and Johannis, who gave land to the town in 1714, "that to the glory of God there may a meeting house be made."
And there the Dutch Reformed Church stands today, excepting Kingston the oldest one in the county. Accord was the old Mombaccus, where first white men saw carved on a sycamore tree the face of a warrior -- a dubious welcome. And so it became, in Dutch slang, "place of the mask."

Tales of Tom Quick who became the avenger of his fathers death by the Indians. Legend says he promised to kill 100 Indians & the stories relate how he tried to carry out his vow.

The Tom Quick Monument commemorates a man known as “The Indian Slayer” or “The Avenger of the Delaware.” After Quick’s father, the first white settler in Milford, was killed by Indians in 1756, Quick made it his mission to avenge the death — hence his nickname. Quick’s bones were placed in the cornerstone of the monument.

Historians are split on whether Quick Jr., the first white child born within present-day Milford, was a hero or a villian. While the rest of the Quick family settled into society, he carried on his one-man vendetta, killing a reported 99 Indians. Robert Ripley in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” claims that Quick died of smallpox; and, still bitter over his actions, Indians dug up his grave and contracted the disease.
